Our values are lost. Western society as we knew it is over. All fundamental bases that supported and sustained us have since long ago been eliminated and vanished. A new beginning - M.N.A - is what everybody is looking for. A new beginning based on new ideas, values and facts.

Religion/ Church cannot and won't offer solutions any more. Politics cannot exist any more and academics and artists have managed to loose every capacity and right of authority. They have been banished by economist and financial politicians and what they have to say has no value for the people. A new beginning is what I demand and persecute.

My baptism crucifix was molten and a cold coin was created in it’s place.

Οι αξίες μας έχουν χαθεί. Η δυτική κοινωνία όπως την ξἐραμε έως σἠμερα έχει τελειώσει. Ὀλες οι βἀσεις που έως τὠρα μας κρατοὐσαν και μας συντηροὐσαν ἐχουν προ πολλοὐ εξαλειφθεἰ και εξαφανιστεἰ. Μια νέα ἀρχη-Μ.Ν.Α- εἰναι αυτὀ που ὀλοι ζητοὐν. Μια νἐα αρχἠ σε μια νἐα βἀση ιδεὠν, αξιὠν και δεδομἐνων.

Η θρησκεἰα/εκκλησἰα δεν μπορεἰ και δεν θἐλει να προσφἐρει πια λὐσεις. Η πολιτικἠ δεν μπορεἰ πια να υφἰσταται, και οι ακαδημαικοἰ και καλλιτἐχνες κατἀφεραν να χἀσουν κἀθε αξἰωμα και κἀθε λὀγο εξουσἰας- Εκδιὠθηκαν απο τους οικονομολὀγους και οικονομικοὐς πολιτικοὐς και ο λὀγος τους πια δεν έχει θἐση ανἀμεσα στον λαὀ-. Μια νἐα αρχή εἰναι αυτὀ που ζητὠ και καταδιὠκω.

Το Μουσείο Άλεξ Μυλωνά – Μακεδονικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης παρουσιάζει την performance του Παντελή Μάκκα Το Τέλος της Λήθης, με τη συμμετοχή των ηθοποιών Θεοδώρα Τζήμου και Νέστορα Κοψιδά, σε κοστούμια της Digitaria, τη Δευτέρα 7 Νοεμβρίου 2011, στις 21:00. Η είσοδος είναι ελεύθερη.

Η performance θα δοθεί στο χώρο της έκθεσης του Παντελή Μάκκα Κατασκευάζοντας τη Μνήμη μέσω της Κινούμενης Εικόνας, που παρουσιάζεται στο Μουσείο Άλεξ Μυλωνά σε επιμέλεια Ντένη Ζαχαρόπουλου και εντάσσεται στο παράλληλο πρόγραμμα της 3ης Μπιενάλε της Αθήνας ΜΟΝΟΔΡΟΜΟΣ (22 Οκτωβρίου-11 Δεκεμβρίου 2011).

Η performance δίνεται στο πλαίσιο της έκθεσης, που αποτελεί την πρώτη παρουσίαση καλλιτεχνικής έρευνας στην Ελλάδα και ορίζεται σαν συνδυασμός ορισμένων από τις διαδικασίες της επιστημονικής έρευνας και της καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας. Πραγματεύεται το θέμα του ορισμού και της διερεύνησης της κυτταρικής μνήμης και συγκεκριμένα, όπως αναφέρει και ο Παντελής Μάκκας:
Σε όλη την ιστορία, ένας αριθμός ατόμων στην επιστημονική κοινότητα, φάνηκε διστακτικός στο να αποδεχθεί ή ακόμα να αναγνωρίσει νέες ιδέες απλώς και μόνο επειδή δεν ήταν σε θέση να τις ταιριάξει στα όρια της περιορισμένης κατανόησής τους σχετικά με το φυσικό κόσμο. Στον τομέα της μεταμόσχευσης, μια ανεξερεύνητη και αμφιλεγόμενη περιοχή έχει αρχίσει να προκύπτει ως αποτέλεσμα μιας έννοιας γνωστής ως κυτταρική μνήμη. Τι είναι η κυτταρική μνήμη, ιδίως σε σχέση με την τεχνολογία της μεταμόσχευσης; Και είναι η κυτταρική μνήμη, στην πραγματικότητα, μια έγκυρη έννοια που αξίζει περαιτέρω διερεύνηση;

The Museum Alex Mylona-Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art presents a performance by Pantelis Makkas, The End Of Oblivion, on Monday, November 7 2011, at 21:00 with the participation of the actors Theodora Jimou and Nestoras Kopsidas, in costumes by Digitaria,. Admission is free.

The performance will be held in the spaces of the Pantelis Makkas - Constructing Memory Through The Moving Image exhibition, which is curated by Denys Zacharopoulos and is part of the parallel program of the 3rd Athens Biennale 2011 MONODROME (22 October – 12 December 2011), at the Museum Alex Mylona.

The performance deals with the issue of defining and investigating cellular memory and is organized in the context of the exhibition, which is the first show of artistic research in Greece. According to Pantelis Makkas:
Throughout history, a number of people in the scientific community seemed reluctant to accept or even to identify new ideas simply because they were unable to match the boundaries of limited understanding about the natural world. In the field of transplantation, an uncharted and controversial territory has begun to arise as a result of a concept known as cellular memory. What is cellular memory, particularly in relation to the technology of transplantation? And is cellular memory, in fact, a valid concept that deserves further investigation?

The Museum Alex Mylona-Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art presents the exhibition Pantelis Makkas Constructing Memory Through The Moving Image, curated by Denys Zacharopoulos and co-organized by Pantelis Makkas. The exhibition will be presented from the 14th of September until the 20th of November 2011, will participate in the parallel program of the 3rd Athens Biennale MONODROME (22 October – 12 December 2011) and will be opened on Friday, 23 of September, at 20:00.

Το Μουσείο Άλεξ Μυλωνά – Μακεδονικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης παρουσιάζει την έκθεση του Παντελή Μάκκα Κατασκευάζοντας τη Μνήμη μέσω της Κινούμενης Εικόνας, σε επιμέλεια Ντένη Ζαχαρόπουλου. Η έκθεση είναι μια παραγωγή του Μακεδονικού Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης και του Παντελή Μάκκα, και θα παρουσιαστεί από τις 14 Σεπτεμβρίου έως και τις 20 Νοεμβρίου 2011. “Pantelis Makkas is a peculiar case of an artist, both in Greece and abroad. With great admiration I discovered his current work, which he has conceived and actualized in Holland and Paris for some years now. It is this work that we present for the first time in its entirety at the Museum Alex Mylona – Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, bestowing great expectations on this exhibition, regarding the importance and the size of the proposal that he is completing both artistically and scientifically.
Besides his unarguable talent and the aesthetical and artistic completeness that he achieves with his personal style, Makkas also, in these works, establishes and delves into a rare intellectual personality and social size. It is with great pleasure when one comes across a young artist who has so clearly undertaken together with his work, also the concern for people in our time. The research dimension and systematic manner bring Pantelis Makkas close to worldwide acclaimed scientific labs and researchers, without negating from the subject he is working on and his approach to it, the emotion with which he treats human life and being. Through the study of memory and its dysfunctions, Makkas lays on the table, almost from the start, the ontology of modern human beings. With the questions he poses, especially to people with actual problems, he contemplates without bombast, the frame of our existence, the consciousness and dementia, our selves and the world.
Mental and physical memory construct, deconstruct and reconstruct what we are and are not, what we could and could not be. Through constant care and observation of the other, Makkas reminds us in a direct way, that though we might think that every artist who completes a substantial work is preoccupied with himself, he is mainly involved intensely and systematically with the transfer of the so called self to something else…Ηe is not necessarily dealing with our poor and selfish “ego”, but he is examining and exploring inaccessible areas of otherness and replaces the “common ego” with a “peculiar ego” that gives reason to his work and to the meaning of human being, which he proposes to us and he converses intellectually and personally with it.
With no desire to jump into conclusions, the reason why Makkas’s work and career is so important now, is because in his attitude there is first and foremost, a research power and dynamic that runs through the vast field of knowledge and the questions that follow him, focuses the anxiety of the other and embraces a kind of person, whom though we all exorcise, seems like he is the one closest and most familiar with what we tend to be in the contemporary world. Therefore here, not without a tender tragicness, Makkas presents together with the difficult position of the “Other”, the prospect which organically threatens the position of ourselves today: the man without memory”.

Όπως αναφέρει ο επιμελητής της έκθεσης Ντένης Ζαχαρόπουλος:
“Ο Παντελής Μάκκας είναι μια ιδιότυπη περίπτωση καλλιτέχνη τόσο στα ελληνικά πράγματα όσο και διεθνώς. Με μεγάλο θαυμασμό ανακάλυψα το σημερινό του έργο, που εδώ και κάποια χρόνια συνέλαβε και πραγματοποίησε στην Ολλανδία και το Παρίσι. Το έργο αυτό παρουσιάζουμε συνολικά σήμερα για πρώτη φορά στο Μουσείο Αλεξ Μυλωνά-Μακεδονικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης, εναποθέτοντας στην έκθεσή του μεγάλες προσδοκίες σχετικά με τη σημασία και το μέγεθος της πρότασης που ολοκληρώνει καλλιτεχνικά και επιστημονικά.
Στα έργα αυτά ο Μάκκας, πέρα από το αναμφισβήτητο ταλέντο και την αισθητική και καλλιτεχνική αρτιότητα που πετυχαίνει με την προσωπική του γραφή, οριοθετεί και εμβαθύνει μια σπάνια πνευματική προσωπικότητα και κοινωνικό μέγεθος. Με ιδιαίτερη χαρά συναντά κανείς ένα νέο καλλιτέχνη που έχει τόσο ξεκάθαρα αναλάβει μαζί με το έργο του και το μέλημα του ανθρώπου στην εποχή μας. Η ερευνητική διάσταση και συστηματικότητα φέρνουν τον Παντελή Μάκκα κοντά σε διεθνώς σημαντικά επιστημονικά εργαστήρια και ερευνητές χωρίς να αναιρεί από το θέμα που επεξεργάζεται και από την προσέγγιση με την οποία το πλησιάζει, τη συγκίνηση με την οποία αντιμετωπίζει τον άνθρωπο και τη ζωή. Μέσα από τη μελέτη της μνήμης και τις δυσλειτουργίες της, ο Μάκκας θέτει σχεδόν εξ αρχής την οντολογία του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου επί τάπητος. Με τα ερωτηματικά που θέτει συγκεκριμένα σε άτομα με πραγματικά προβλήματα αναλογίζεται παράλληλα και χωρίς μεγαλοστομία, πάνω στο πλαίσιο της ύπαρξής μας, της συνείδησης και της άνοιας, του εαυτού μας και του κόσμου.
Ψυχική και σωματική μνήμη δομούν, αποδομούν κι αναδομούν αυτό που είμαστε κι αυτό που δεν είμαστε, αυτό που θα μπορούσαμε κι αυτό που δε μπορούμε να είμαστε. Μέσα από μια συνεχή μέριμνα και παρατήρηση του άλλου, ο Μάκκας μας θυμίζει με άμεσο τρόπο, πως κάθε καλλιτέχνης που φτάνει να ολοκληρώσει έργο ουσιαστικό μπορεί να νομίζουμε πως ασχολείται με τον εαυτό του, κυρίως όμως απασχολείται έντονα και συστηματικά με τη μετάθεση αυτού που εννοούμε και καταλαβαίνουμε ως εαυτό σε κάτι άλλο... Δεν ασχολείται αναγκαστικά με το πενιχρό κι εγωιστικό μας "εγώ", αλλά περιεργάζεται κι εξερευνά απροσπέλαστες περιοχές της ετερότητας κι αντικαθιστά το "κοινότυπο εγώ" με έναν "ιδιότυπο άλλο" που δίνει το λόγο στο έργο του και στην έννοια του ανθρώπου τον οποία μας προτείνει και συνδυαλέγεται πνευματικά και προσωπικά μαζί της.
Χωρίς να θέλω να βγάλω βιαστικά συμπεράσματα ,το έργο του κι η καριέρα του Μάκκα αν είναι σήμερα τόσο σημαντικά είναι γιατί μέσα από τη στάση του προέχει μια ερευνητική δύναμη και δυναμική που διατρέχουν με ιδιαίτερα χαμηλούς τόνους τον αχανή χώρο της γνώσης και τα ερωτηματικά που τον ακολουθούν, εστιάζουν στην αγωνία του άλλου και αγκαλιάζουν ένα είδος ανθρώπου που αν και όλοι μας εξορκίζουμε, μοιάζει τελικά να είναι ο πλέον κοντινός και οικείος σε σχέση με αυτό που τείνουμε να είμαστε στο σύγχρονο κόσμο. ΄Ετσι, εδώ, όχι χωρίς μια τρυφερή τραγικότητα, ο Μάκκας παρουσιάζει μαζί με τη δύσκολη θέση του "άλλου" την προοπτική που απειλεί οργανικά τη θέση του εαυτού μας σήμερα : τον άνθρωπο χωρίς μνήμη”.

Festival ‘Nieuwe Vragen/New Questions’

On 29 August 2011 the festival Nieuwe Vragen/New Questions will kick-off the academic year. The festival focuses on the theme of ‘research in the arts' and is part of the study programme for all KABK students.

‘Research' is the current buzzword in the artworld. What kind of research is this? How is it undertaken? Does it introduce a new way of working?
Artists, designers and theorists will explore these questions with their own work as a starting point. They will discuss the exchange between making and thinking, and the socio-critical questions art poses.The programme is composed of a keynote lecture and six short lectures.

Keynote lecture by:
Stephan Dillemuth (1954, DE), Dillemuth is an artist who sees art as a tool for artistic research and critical reflection on the circumstances of contemporary life. Considering the impact of 'lifestyle' as a new ideology of self-fulfilment and liberation, Stephan Dillemuth has investigated the Boholand and German Lebensreform movements at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.

Short lectures by:
Lucy Cotter (1973, IRL), art critic and head of the Master Artistic Research at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, focuses on issues such as cultural translation, cultural decolonisation and critical art practices in the age of globalisation.
Sher Doruff (1950, USA), artist, has been working in the visual and performance-based collaborative arts in a variety of capacities since the 1970's. Her doctoral research mapped collaborative, creative processes in Live Art performance practice.
Sophie Krier (1976, LUX), designer, explores the peripheries of the design field, with a focus on film, writing and temporary interventions.
Thomas Lommée (1979, BE), designer, initiator of the OpenStructures project, a hands-on design experiment that explores the possibility of a modular construction model where everyone designs for everyone on the basis of oneshared geometrical grid.
Paulien Oltheten (1982, NL), artist, presents an investigative approach through photographs and video: identifying idiosyncratic moments, gestures, and unintentional performances of people in public space.
Aimée Zito Lema, (1982, ARG), artist, reflects on socio-political circumstances employing a subjective language. Her research and strategies involve shared working processes and collaborations (with actors, anthropologists, family members, activists or factory workers).

The day will start with an introduction by Janneke Wesseling (1955, NL), professor in art theory and art critic. A plenary debate will be moderated by philosopher Leonhard de Paepe (1980, NL) at the end of the day.

An important element of the festival is a continuous film programme. The films, all of them related to the theme of the festival, will be screened simultaneously at different locations throughout the academy.

The festival will be concluded with a festive launch of the book See it Again, Say it Again. The Artist as Researcher, edited by Janneke Wesseling and published by Valiz, Amsterdam.

FAREWELL | Kunsthalle Athena

Εξαιρετικό το concept και αναμφισβήτητα ιδανικός ο χώρος της Kunsthalle Athena για ένα σπονδυλωτό θέαμα αυτού του είδους, αν και λόγω υπερβολικής κίνησης στους διαδρόμους της γκαλλερί έχω την αίσθηση ότι δεν έδωσα αρκετή σημασία σε κάποιες απ’τις performances.
Μου άρεσαν όλες πολύ, αλλά θα σταθώ λίγο σ’αυτήν του εικαστικού Παντελή Μάκκα με την ηθοποιό Θεοδώρα Τζήμου που με τον τρόπο επικοινωνίας θεατή-εκθέματος με έφερε πολλά χρόνια πίσω, όταν διάβασα το πρώτο μου βιβλίο του Nicholas Serota -”Εμπειρία ή ερμηνεία: Το δίλημμα των μουσείων μοντέρνας τέχνης”- που περιέγραφε αυτήν ακριβώς την εμπειρία, το “να κοιτάς μέσα από μια τρύπα”. Ήταν η πρώτη φορα που συνειδητοποίησα πόσο δυνατές εμπειρίες μπορούν να προσφέρουν τα χωρικά στοιχεία κάθε κλίμακας σε έναν εκθεσιακό χώρο, και ταυτόχρονα πόσο τα μουσεία με την κλασικη τους μορφή και έννοια δεν επιτρέπουν στον επισκέπτη να νιώσει και να οικειοποιηθεί οτιδήποτε.
Είναι πολύ μικρή και ταυτόχρονα τεράστια η απόσταση ανάμεσα στο να δημιουργήσει κανείς μια μουσειακή εμπειρία κάνοντας το θεατή συμμέτοχο (στο βαθμό βέβαια που το ίδιο το έκθεμα επιτρέπει εναλλακτικές αναγνώσεις ή θεάσεις), και στο να τοποθετήσει τα εκθέματα στο χώρο, στήνοντας “άλλη μια έκθεση”. Είναι σημαντικό να αναγκαστεί αυτός που μπαίνει στο χώρο έστω και για ένα σύντομο πέρασμα να δημιουργήσει τη δική του προσωπική ανάμνηση από τη χρήση του χώρου της έκθεσης· να ακολουθήσει κατά το δυνατον το δικό του σενάριο κίνησης, να αισθανθεί ότι βλέπει τα πράγματα με τρόπο μοναδικό με αποτέλεσμα να υποκινηθούν και οι δικές του προσωπικές σκέψεις πάνω στα εκθέματα.
Έχω δεί σε αρκετές εκθέσεις ανά τον κόσμο παρόμοιες ποιότητες ουσιαστικής συμμετοχής του κοινού αλλά είναι απρόσμενα συγκινητικό κάθε φορά να βλέπεις το χώρο να λειτουργεί και να σε βάζει σε λειτουργία. Δυστυχώς δεν είχα καλή camera μαζί μου, αλλά κάτι έβγαλα…ίσως ο πιο εύληπτος αποχαιρετισμός-στα όρια του κανιβαλισμού-αλλά τόσο ουσιαστικός και διαδραστικός ταυτόχροναάλλη μια απ’ τις εμμονές μου, η κίνηση στο χώρο, ή μάλλον “το να γίνεσαι ένα με το χώρο”

Αποχαιρετισμός / Farewell

Η Τρίτη ήταν η τελευταία ημέρα της διήμερης εικαστικής έκθεσης-παράστασης-πειράματος με τον τίτλο Αποχαιρετισμός / Farewell, που έλαβε χώρα στο γνωστό, πια, και πανέμορφο νεοκλασικό της Kunsthalle Athena στον Κεραμεικό. Έχοντας διαβάσει το δελτίο Τύπου τις προηγούμενες ημέρες, μου είχε κινήσει την περιέργεια ευχάριστα η σύμπραξη της Μαρίνας Φωκίδη με την ηθοποιό Θέμιδα Μπαζάκα στο curating, καθώς και η ιδέα του εγχειρήματος που, ενώνοντας εικαστικούς και ηθοποιούς κάτω απ’ το κοινό θεματικό πλαίσιο του αποχαιρετισμού, είχε ως στόχο να πυροδοτήσει απροσδόκητους καλλιτεχνικούς σπινθήρες κι ενδεχομένως να δημιουργήσει αφηγήσεις που κανείς δεν θα περίμενε σε πρώτο επίπεδο.

Παρακολουθώντας τα περισσότερα (μόνο στην περφόρμανς του Στάνκογλου δεν κατάφερα να μπω, λόγω μεγάλης προσέλευσης καθόλη τη διάρκεια της πεντάωρης έκθεσης), ένιωσα πως, όντως, αυτό που είχαν στο μυαλό τους οι καλλιτέχνες που συμμετείχαν το πλησίασαν σε μεγάλο ποσοστό. Εγώ θα σταθώ ιδιαίτερα σε τρία σημεία που με κινητοποίησαν πιο πολύ (χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει κάτι αρνητικό για τα υπόλοιπα - όλα είναι θέμα γούστου, άλλωστε). Η σύμπραξη της ηθοποιού Στεφανίας Γουλιώτη με την εικαστικό Χριστίνα Δημητριάδη, του εικαστικού Παντελή Μάκκα με την ηθοποιό Θεοδώρα Τζήμου και του εικαστικού Δημήτρη Τάταρη με την Ιωάννα Τσάμη με έκαναν να συγκινηθώ με τον τρόπο που το κατα- φέρνει η τέχνη, όταν συνειδητοποιείς πως ακινητοποιήθηκες για μερικές στιγμές κι επανέφερες την αντίληψή σου διαποτισμένη μέσα από την ομορφιά της τέχνης. Δεν συμβαίνει ούτε εύκολα, ούτε συχνά.

Ο Αποχαιρετισμός είναι μια έκθεση - παράσταση - πείραμα, στην οποία καλούνται δέκα ηθοποιοί να συνεργαστούν με δέκα εικαστικούς καλλιτέχνες, προκειμένου να παράγουν έναν αριθμό ζωντανών δράσεων, που θα παρουσιάζονται ζωντανά στον χώρο για δύο συνεχόμενες ημέρες, και για πέντε ώρες κάθε μέρα, με θεματικό πλαίσιο την αίσθηση του αποχαιρετισμού.

Στόχος όλων των συμμετεχόντων είναι τα «έργα» να αποκαλύπτουν τόσο τις συναισθηματικές, όσο και τις κοινωνικοπολιτικές διαστάσεις του αποχαιρετισμού σε όλο του το εννοιολογικό φάσμα, μια καλλιτεχνική ανάγκη η οποία θα απορρεύσει οργανικά από τη ζωντανή ζύμωση μεταξύ τους. Το σύνολο των δημιουργών θα συνεργαστεί σε μη προεπιλεγμένες ομάδες ή ζευγάρια από κάποιον τρίτο σκηνοθέτη ή επιμελητή, με μόνη προϋπόθεση τη συνεργασία με κάποιον δημιουργό από διαφορετικό εκφραστικό τομέα.

Genius without Talent

Everyone is a genius, but developing talent(s) prevents us from discovering this genius. We often forget that every person is a genius because we are already too busy “exploiting” our own talents.

These are the words of the French artist and economist Robert Filliou, which at first sight look like the now legendary claim of Joseph Beuys: “Jeder ist ein Kunstler’ (Everyone is an artist). In contrast with the “dogma” of his German contemporary, Filliou’s statements – made in the context of the project ‘La Republique Geniale’ – appear to be paradoxical and illogical. He both confirms and invalidates that everyone carries a “genius” in him or herself, and refers to both the potential and the impossibility of this.

Filliou was a ‘porteur des utopies de son temps’ (carrier of the utopias of his age), and as a visual poet he believed that change was possible by means of the use of values such as intuition, innocence, imagination and freedom. In 2010 we see the relationship between concepts such as “genius” and “talent”, “art” and “creativity”, knowledge and know-how versus conscious ignorance in a different way. Nevertheless, this makes Filliou’s statement seem all the more relevant as it currently seems as if we are being pulled in two directions. On the one hand, we live in a “casting society”, in which everyone tries to demonstrate that he or she excels at a particular skill or can achieve a particular level of fame and excellence – just think of the popularity of programmes such as X Factor, So you think you can dance, but also The Apprentice and America’s Next Top Model. On the other hand, we live in a world in which the boundaries between expertise and amateurism become increasingly vague and impenetrable, and in which real knowledge becomes increasingly irrelevant. At least that is the view of internet critics such as Nicolas Carr, Damina Thompson and Andrew Keen, the author of the extremely popular book “The Cult of the Amateur: How Today’s Internet Is Killing Our Culture”. Like him, a large number of the opponents of the web 2.0-movement allege that “user- generated content’ on the internet means that vital and factual information becomes inaccessible and that the “authority” of “people with real knowledge” is eroded.

As the critic Jorinde Seijdel argues in her recent essay ‘De waarde van de amateur’ (The value of the amateur), Keen and his colleagues are prone to hyperbole, and the situation is not as black and dramatic as they maintain. However, it is a fact that the expert and the specialist, like the (public) intellectual, have become minority positions in 2011. Generally speaking, citizens have become more articulate and worldwide and want to participate and make their own choices, rather than having a blind trust in the opinions and ideas of prominent and authoritative people.

This has implications for various areas of expertise, and certainly also for the way in which Dutch and West European society and the media view art and artists today. What is the difference between creativity and art? What makes something “professional art”, and why is something similar seen as “amateur art” or “folk art”? How subjective are these labels and categories and to what extent are they influenced by their context and the system? To what extent are the appreciation and production of art forms of specialist knowledge? Why should I value conceptual art and why are the figurative paintings which I think are beautiful not exhibited in the museum? As a viewer, can I simply decide for myself what I consider to be art and what I reject as “nonsense” or “pseudo-intellectual hogwash”? What do I have to know before I can pronounce these sorts of judgements?

Following exhibitions such as, ‘The Dilettante’ in Marres in 2006, ‘Amateurs’ in CCA Wattis San Francisco in 2008 and ‘Amateurism’ in Amsterdam in 2008, this exhibition aims to raise these questions audibly (without giving comprehensive answers), on the basis of a broad range of contemporary and historical art practices, and explore in an associative way what the concepts of the ‘amateur’ and ‘amateurism’ mean today in the field of contemporary art.

During Festival Key of Life, Leiden is three days long scene where artists and scientists wrestling with the question: what is man?Ideas, thoughts, images and experiments will form in exhibitions, performances, street theater and more. Special thinkers and doers to give each business line from their own perspective and response to who we (think) have.Traditionally, the man inextricably linked to notions of soul, a consciousness and free will. But since technical developments and MRI scans literally between our ears can see, that picture changed. During Festival Key of Life are nostalgic notions about who we are, beaten to smithereens. Sometimes silently, sometimes with a lot of noise.For three days at the most beautiful locations of Leyden presented a lively program. A program that almost bursting at the seams of the inspiring, surprising and exciting demonstrations, speed dates, films, performances, exhibitions and more.
